Everything you need to know about fly control

What are some of the common health problems flies can pass off?
There’s a fly in my soup!

We’ve all heard the joke, but when it really happens to you, it’s not as funny. In fact, flies can cause serious health problems. Because they frequent garbage, feces, and other decaying matter, they pick up over 200 different pathogens that can be transmitted to humans.

Many of the common health problems flies can pass off include:

  • Salmonella
  • E. coli
  • H. pylori
  • Staph infections
Why is sanitation important to control flies?

Flies breed incredibly quickly which is why it is important to eliminate all of them and not just the adults. Although there are different species that can infest your home, they generally are attracted to similar things. Drain flies are attracted to the scum that accumulates in your drains and other areas of your plumbing system where dirty water flows. Because they’re attracted to food and moist environments, fruit flies can be found in any crack, crevice, or drain.

What can I do to help prevent the occurrence of flies?

Our NWA and Mountain Home fly control technicians suggest that you eliminate the following to improve your property’s sanitation and prevent the occurrence of flies:

  • Standing water in your yard
  • Accumulating garbage
  • Compost piles or decaying organic matter
  • Dirty pipes or drains

Our IPM Approach to Fly Control

At Hopper Termite & Pest, we combine an integrated pest management approach with the use of environmentally friendly materials to help rid you of your fly problem and prevent their return. Because no two properties are the same, we take this approach and customize it to fit your specific needs.

This process includes:

The inspection

When we arrive at your property, we will first begin by performing a thorough inspection. This will enable our NWA and Mountain Home fly control experts to discover what’s attracting them to your property. Due to our experience and significant training, we know exactly where to look and what to look for. We will identify the type of fly you’re dealing with and from there we will be able to form a treatment plan.

Exclusion

In addition to sanitation and removing anything that attracts flies to your property, it’s also important to get rid of any access points. We suggest keeping your doors, windows, and vents closed as much as possible. We will also assist you with sealing or screening your windows, or any cracks in your doors, foundations, etc. Should you need more prevention assistance, we’re happy to install automatic door closing devices and curtains that blow air away from doors, which will help keep flies from entering.

Trapping (Mechanical Control)

Our fly control specialists will determine where to install ultraviolet light traps.

Fly Control Products

Often, green prevention products can be useful for fly prevention and management. Depending on what we find during our inspection, we will discuss which products we recommend and begin the first treatment for you.
