Why Do Scorpions Like Bathrooms?

In this part of the country, it’s common to find scorpions in your bathroom. Why are they attracted to this area of your home? Scorpions like places that are dark and damp. This means that without the proper intervention, you may inadvertently end up sharing your bathroom with creatures that sting.

A Preference for the Dark

Like other creepy-crawly critters, scorpions prefer the dark. In the dark, they can hide from predators, the hot sun, and exposure to sunlight. When they’re outdoors during the day, scorpions hide in burrows or in small crevices.

Scorpions are most active during the night. By being active at night, they can conserve the water that they need to maintain their body temperature. Nighttime is also an ideal time for scorpions to hunt.

In your home, the bathroom is a common place to come across scorpions. The space likely contains dark hiding places. Protection from predators and the elements are major reasons why the critters may want to be your roommate.

They Need Water

All creatures need water to live, including scorpions. During hot summer days, the critters often make their way into homes because they’re searching for water. To get into homes, scorpions enter through plumbing systems and pipe drains. Entrances like these are why scorpions often make themselves at home in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens. The creatures are attracted to places with water because they hunt in these areas when they’re outside.

If you’ve spotted several scorpions in your area, pour a tablespoon or two of bleach into your home’s drains weekly. Bleach will discourage the animals from coming into your home this way. Keep in mind that scorpions are tough creatures, which makes getting rid of them a challenge. If you think that you have an infestation, consider hiring a professional extermination company to handle it.

Scorpions are able to live in cold climates, but they prefer to live in warm places like Arizona. During the winter, the beasties will search for warm places to hide when the temperatures start to drop, so keep an especially sharp eye out for them in the colder months.

The Search for Food

Scorpions eat insects like:

  • Spiders
  • Flies
  • Beetles
  • Centipedes

Large ones dine on mice, small lizards, and other scorpions. This means that if your home contains the type of insects or animals that scorpions consider prey, it might attract them.

To prevent your home from becoming attractive to scorpions, be sure to clean away any leftover meal crumbs and drink spills. Getting rid of crumbs means that scorpion prey won’t be attracted to your home. This makes your home less appealing to scorpions too.

It’s also a good idea to take care of insect control along the exterior of your home. This will decrease the number of scorpions that might invade your home later.

Be extra wary if you have citrus trees on your property. Scorpions are attracted to them. The bark scorpion is especially attracted to them because they like to live in the loose bark of these trees. The creatures also have an affinity for rotting fruit and roots that are starting to decay.

Protection

Scorpions need protection from light and heat. This means that the creatures must live in places that provide them with protection during the day.

The critters would rather remain outside in their natural habitat, but if these spaces are disrupted, they will seek out a new place to live. If your home is close to their natural habitat, then they may decide to move in with you.

Homes that are cluttered provide scorpions with a lot of places to hide. These creatures hide under things that will protect them from excess light and high temperatures. If you store firewood, straw, or bark around your home, then scorpions will be attracted to these areas as well, which means that they could wind up inside.

To prevent scorpions from wanting to live in or near your home, keep your yard and garage clean. This step will lower your chances of suffering from a scorpion infestation.

Be sure to check your home for areas that would allow scorpions to come inside. Seal gaps between windows and doors using caulk or weather stripping. Like rodents, scorpions can squeeze through extremely small spaces. In fact, some experts claim that they can make their way through spaces that are as narrow as the width of your debit card.

Prevention is Best

When it comes to scorpions, it’s best if they stay outside in their natural habitat, so take steps that will dissuade them from moving in with you. Keeping them out of your home increases the safety of you and your family, giving you peace of mind.
