When is Termite Season?
What are termites?
At the most basic level, termites are a type of insect that is highly organized and eat a diet of mostly dead wood. This is a huge problem for humans because they can be quite a tough pest. Colonies can sometimes have over 1 million individuals, and they cause over $2 billion in damages each year.
When do termites swarm?
The main type of termite we deal with in Arkansas is the subterranean termite. These colonies take a few years to mature, but after that point, they can start doing real damage to your home. Termite’s feast on construction wood, eating as much as their huge colonies can handle, which turns out to be quite a lot.
Generally, termites are most active during the spring months from March to June. They require high levels of moisture, so be aware after a big rainfall.
Where will I find termites?
Termites can slowly infest a home for years without being caught. If you’re not aware of some of the early warning signs, your home could be the next victim of your local colony. Be on alert if you see any of the following signs:
- The presence of winged swarmers, especially near windows or doors.
- Clicking noises coming from within your walls.
- Hollow sounding wood.
- Termite droppings
It’s also important to know that termites nest underground. Mud or soil near your home may just be the outside of their colony. If you do manage to spot them, they can easily be confused for ants. Termites have the nickname of the “white ant” because of their close resemblance to the insect.
Lastly, while subterranean termites are called that because they nest underground, there are other areas that they can make their nests in if you have a roof leak that is an ideal environment for these pests to grow and start their frantic feeding.
