Rain, Rain, Go Away… And Take the Pests With You!
April showers may bring May flowers, but they also bring more bugs. Many bugs are not a fan of excessive or heavy rain, and for this reason, you will notice more bugs out and about or in your home after heavy rain. Just like us, they are doing their best to stay dry. So what can you do to keep your home pest-free?
Read over the following tips to help keep the number of pests in your home and around your sacred outdoor spaces to a minimum.
Standing Water Is a Big No, No
One of the most annoying pests, the mosquito, is attracted to standing water. After heavy rain, you can find multiple items around your yard that have filled with water such as buckets, drainage areas, pool covers, trash cans, and discarded tires. Mosquitos will flock to these water sources and begin reproducing. In order to reduce the number of mosquitos, you must be diligent about pouring out standing water. After the rain stops, take a walk through your yard to see if there is anything that is holding water that can be dumped. During rainy seasons when it rains a lot during the night, it is also a good idea to create a routine to examine outdoors at least once a week.
Seal It. Caulk It. Protect It.
Rain rarely affects larger insects. However, smaller insects such as ants and spiders find it difficult to survive during long heavy rainfall. For this reason, they begin seeking shelter in your home. Taking steps to protect your home from smaller bugs such as spiders and ants can have a huge effect later down the road. We call these steps exclusion techniques.
Some effective exclusion techniques include sealing or resealing doors and windows, caulking or filling up small holes in and outside of the home, and making sure plants are not too close to the home. These techniques may not seem like much, but they can make a huge impact when bugs are seeking a dry place during heavy rainfall.
