How to Keep Your Pool Mosquito Free This Summer
In summertime, Arkansas gets hot and humid, and there’s no better way to cool off than to hop in the pool. However, you might not be alone. Just like you enjoy your pool to splash around and have fun, mosquitoes enjoy your pool as a place to feed and nest. Suddenly, a fun and relaxing swimming session can turn sour as you return inside covered in itchy, and sometimes painful, bites.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help prevent mosquitoes from being attracted to your pool this summer. Read the tips put together by our expert mosquito control technicians at Hopper Termite & Pest.
Invest in a Pool Cover
You’ve probably seen bees or other insects find their way into your pool, so you already know that you’re not the only one who finds a dip relaxing on a hot day. However, mosquitoes use your pool as a nesting ground to raise children and allow their children to complete their lifecycles. Remember, it only takes a week for a mosquito to become an adult. By investing in a pool cover, you remove a popular area for nesting and force the mosquitoes to search for somewhere else.
Continue to Monitor Your Chlorine Level
Having your own pool is a great luxury, but it also comes with a lot of maintenance and upkeep. One major aspect is ensuring you have the proper chlorine levels. Not only does chlorine work to kill off germs and viruses to make your pool safe to swim in, but it also helps make your pool uninhabitable for mosquitoes. Your pool should maintain a pH level of anywhere from 7.2 to 7.8.
Install a Yellow Light
Believe it or not, mosquitoes are sensitive to light. Therefore, we recommend installing a yellow light in your pool. Yellow lights aren’t as bright as ultraviolet or other types of light, which means that the mosquitoes will be least attracted to it.
Make Sure Your Water Filter Runs & Operates Normally
Mosquitoes require stagnant, slow moving water in order for them to land and deposit their offspring. By having a pump or water filter run for even just a few hours a day, it will create enough of a current for mosquitoes to be unable to land and reproduce properly.
