How to Tell the Difference Between Termites and Ants

by Hopper Environmental on September 28, 2011

Termites are commonly referred to as “flying ants” because that is exactly what they look like. That is why so many people have trouble telling the two insects apart. Though they look strikingly similar, they are quite different; one is a mere nuisance (and perhaps a bit creepy) and the other can literally eat through your home.  It is in your best interest to know the difference between termites and ants.

Termites

At first, you’ll have to look closely to tell the difference, but after a while, it will be like second nature. They truly do look different if you know what to look for. Perhaps the best place to start is with the wings. They are large and easy to spot. With one wing on each side, there are a total of two, and they are all equal in size. The next best place to look is the antennae. They are slightly curved inward and are beaded. Imagine tiny beads stacked on the bow of an arrow, which is how they look.  Lastly, check out the body, specifically the waist. Is it thick and undefined? If so, you’ve got yourself a termite. And if you found it in your home, contact a termite control expert as soon as possible.

Ants

Ants’ bodies look a bit different than termites. If an artist had to choose between painting an ant and a termite, they would probably choose the ant. Here’s why, they have four wings, two on each side, but they aren’t equal in size. The two front wings are much larger and longer than the back two. Unlike the termite, their antennae are not bowed, but bent. They almost create a perfect ninety degree angle. Their waists are quite defined, as if wearing a very tight corset. The other big difference is, if you find ants in your house, it is not as big deal, though most likely something you would probably want to seek the help of a professional pest control expert to help get rid of.

After learning these distinctive characteristics –wings, antennae and waist—you should have no problem telling the ants and termites apart.

If you’re worried the insects you’ve seen in or around your house are termites, take a closer look. You may be quite happy and relieved to discover that they are only winged ants. However, if they are termites, contact the termite control experts at Hopper Environmental Services today for an inspection.
